Careers@Gov sources reviewed 8 November 2026. Resume advice and the fictional example are ApplyLah editorial guidance.

A useful resume makes it easy to connect your experience to the job you want. Start with your contact details and a short summary, then show relevant skills, experience and education. Put your recent experience first, and describe what you actually did. The example below is fictional; replace every detail with your own before applying.

There is no single layout in this guide that guarantees an interview. Use the sections that help explain your fit, and adapt the order to your experience and the role.

BUILD A CLEAR RESUME
1 · Identify the role2 · Choose real evidence3 · Check and tailor

Connect each useful section to the work you want to do.

Start with the job description

Read the responsibilities and pick two or three you can support with real evidence. For an operations coordinator role, these might be maintaining records, arranging schedules and communicating changes. Find an example from paid work, an internship, a project or another relevant activity for each. You do not need to claim experience you do not have.

Choose your sections

  1. Name and contact details. Give a reachable email address and phone number. Check both before sending.
  2. Summary. In two or three sentences, describe your relevant background and the work you are seeking. Avoid claims you cannot explain.
  3. Skills. Select skills you can demonstrate. Group them if that helps a reader scan them.
  4. Experience. Give the organisation, role, dates and a few specific contributions. Start with the most recent role when using a reverse-chronological layout.
  5. Education and training. Include qualifications and training that help explain your readiness for the role.

Turn a duty into evidence

Start with an action, add what you handled, and explain its purpose or result if you can support it. For example:

  • Vague: “Responsible for spreadsheets.”
  • More useful: “Maintained a shared spreadsheet of service requests, checking entries against source forms and flagging missing information for follow-up.”

The second sentence tells a reader what the person checked and what happened when information was missing. A number can add context when accurate, but do not invent a percentage or outcome to make a bullet sound stronger. If your contribution was shared, say what you personally did.

Worked example: operations coordinator

Mei Tan, the organisations and the qualifications in the example are fictional. Mei’s resume connects record keeping, scheduling and customer communication to the hypothetical role. The bullets deliberately avoid invented performance statistics. The downloadable editable text is the complete example; replace names, dates and claims with your own verified details.

Use the complete editable example below.

To adapt it, replace the heading with your target role only if it accurately describes your application. Swap each skill for one you can explain, then replace each bullet with an example from your own experience. Remove training you have not completed. Keep a separate master copy so you can tailor a fresh version for each role. For the next step, use the Singapore job search guide to plan where to look.

If your experience looks different

Starting out: Put relevant education, projects, internships or part-time work where they help the reader see your contribution. For a group project, name your own part and what the team produced; do not claim the entire result as yours.

Changing careers: Keep the dates and titles accurate. Translate the relevant work into language that makes sense to the new role, then explain the connection in your summary. Careers@Gov describes mid-career paths as varied; its advice concerns public-service opportunities, not a universal hiring rule.

Returning after a break: Use the experience and dates you are comfortable presenting accurately. A short, factual explanation can provide context if useful; focus the rest of the space on evidence relevant to the role.

Before you send

  • Compare your summary and strongest bullets with the actual role requirements. Careers@Gov says its public-service shortlisting considers relevant skills, competencies, experience and alignment with requirements in a holistic review; other employers may use different processes.
  • Read the dates, contact details and qualification names against your records.
  • Check that every example is yours and that any figure is supportable.
  • Open the final file and inspect the layout and wording. Follow the employer’s stated submission instructions.

A clear resume is a starting point for a conversation about your experience. Keep the evidence accurate and make the connection to the role easy to see.
