About this role

Job Description We are seeking a research scientist to work on the development of optical quantum memory platforms based on rare-earth-ion-doped crystals, with an emphasis on achieving long storage times. The successful candidate will be required to undertake the following key tasks of the project: Perform extensive cryogenic optical experiments toward realising long-lived quantum storage, using rare-earth-ion–doped solid-state systems. Operate, maintain, and modify laser-based quantum memory experimental platforms, including tunable lasers, frequency-stabilized laser systems, optical modulators, cryogenic setups, and magnetic-field control. Implement and optimise quantum memory protocols relevant to long storage times, including coherence-preserving techniques using radio frequency pulses. Conduct systematic optical spectroscopy and coherence characterisation, extracting key performance metrics such as optical linewidths, coherence times, and storage lifetimes. Contribute to technical reports, manuscripts, and project documentation. The position is offered for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of extension up to five years subject to performance. The role will involve travel to international synchrotron and neutron beamline facilities to support advanced experimental measurements. Qualification and Field of Study PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Quantum Science, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline. At least 5 years of relevant experience. Other Requirements (e.g. Skills, Competencies) Other Requirements (e.g. Skills, Competencies) Strong experimental background in cryogenic optical spectroscopy and laser-based experiments. Demonstrated experience with quantum memory protocols targeting long storage times. Candidates with prior experience in rare-earth-ion spectroscopy, optical coherence control, or solid-state quantum memories will be strongly preferred. Programming language (Matlab and Python) The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
