About this role

You will be part of the Law Editing and Revision Unit in the Legislation Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and will be responsible for providing — • editorial services for the drafting of legislation, including checking of house-styles, formatting and language checks, fact checking, conducting policy and legal research, and legal checks, establishing and maintaining standard provisions, to ensure consistency and quality control across the Singapore Statute Book, • simple legislative drafting and legislative advisory services to the Government and statutory authorities, and • support in preparing revised editions for both Acts and subsidiary legislation. This role also involves organising the timely and efficient proofing of Bills, subsidiary legislation and revised editions, coordinating and liaising between Government Ministries and statutory authorities, the law drafters, editors and publishers within the Division, Parliament Secretariat and the Government Printer to ensure timely and accurate publication in the Gazette and synchronised publication on the online legislation database. Your main job responsibilities as an editor include: 1. Providing legislative editorial services and drafting assistance to law drafters, including making editorial amendments for grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency and compliance with house-styles and drafting directives, as well as simplifying the language of draft legislation, to ensure that legislation to be presented to Parliament or enacted by publication in the Gazette are accurate and error free. 2. Providing advisory services to Government Ministries and statutory authorities on Parliamentary procedures and practices, less complex legal issues and established legislative procedures and processes, publication processes, and drafting approaches. 3. Drafting and vetting less complex subsidiary legislation and Gazette notifications in accordance with the policies of Government Ministries and statutory authorities and in compliance with house-styles and drafting directives, and established precedents. 4. Preparing accurate and error-free revised editions of Acts and subsidiary legislation for publication, including editing to simplify the language (with no change in meaning) and in a way that is consistent with house-styles and drafting directives. 5. Conducting simple legal research. 6. Developing a working knowledge of legislation, legislative processes, house-styles, drafting directives, editing and publishing software, and publication processes, in order to draft, edit and produce high quality work in a short time frame. 7. Proofreading, and performing editorial and stylistic checks of legislation and revised edition proofs before dispatch to Government Ministries and statutory authorities, and before publication. 8. Planning publication schedules for legislation and revised edition projects, including working out resource allocations, timelines and budget (if any). 9. Drafting and vetting minutes of meetings and policy papers for decision/approval. Additionally, you will also be required, from time to time, to provide administrative and legal support services to the Division by undertaking a wide range of administrative projects, committee work and activities to ensure the efficient operation of the Division’s activities and workplan. Requirements: 1. Preferably at least 2 years of relevant working experience, such as experience in editing. Fresh school leavers may also apply. 2. Excellent command of the English language. 3.
