About this role

Job Scope: Befriending & Mentoring Conduct regular 1:1 check-ins with assigned students to build consistent rapport and provide ongoing emotional support Provide a safe, non-judgmental space for students to talk about their emotions, school experiences, peer relationships, and family concerns Listen actively and help students make sense of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in an age-appropriate way Teach and reinforce practical coping strategies such as calming techniques, pausing before reacting, walking away, and seeking help appropriately Be a visible, approachable, and consistent adult presence during key school periods such as recess, transitions, and before/after school where possible Conduct home visits for assigned students where appropriate, to strengthen family engagement, better understand the student's home context, and extend the circle of support beyond school. Home visits should be carried out in pairs and in accordance with school protocols Use home visits as an opportunity to build trust with parents and caregivers, share observations about the student's progress, and align on consistent messages and support strategies between home and school Offer culturally responsive support, drawing on shared language, values, and lived experience where relevant to connect meaningfully with students and their families Restorative Practise Support Support the facilitation of restorative conversations between students following conflicts or incidents, guided by trained staff or the School Counsellor Help students prepare for restorative meetings by working through what happened, how others were affected, and what they can do to make things right Follow up with students after restorative processes to reinforce learning, check on progress, and provide encouragement Assist in reintegration support for students returning from suspension or following serious incidents, helping them re-establish positive relationships and routines Model and reinforce restorative language and values in everyday interactions with students Small Group & Structured Support Co-facilitate or support small group sessions focusing on social skills, emotional regulation, peer relationships, and responsible decision-making Support structured programmes or activities that build students' sense of identity, purpose, and connection to school Coordination & Communication Work closely with School Counsellor(s), Year Heads, and Form Teachers to align support strategies and ensure a consistent approach Provide brief, regular updates on student progress and flag concerns promptly for follow-up, including observations from home visits that may be relevant to the student's support plan Participate in case discussions and contribute observations from day-to-day interactions that may not surface in formal settings Maintain basic records of check-ins, home visits, key observations, and follow-up actions in line with school protocols Requirements: Diploma in Youth Work, Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field or a relevant qualification It is also preferred for the Youth Worker to have relevant experience. Minimum 1-2 years of experience working with children in educational or community or social service settings Familiarity with restorative practice principles Working Hours: Mondays to Fridays: 8.30am to 4.30pm (with lunch break of 30 mins) Contract Period: Estimated (From 17 Aug 2026 to 31 Dec 2026) Option to extend from 1 Jan 2027 to 31 Dec 2027 During the school holidays, the services of the pastoral care officer are required on the following dates to support students: School holidays/closure schedule (with no lunch break included): ✓ 7 Sept 2026 to 11 Sept 2026 (Mon to Friday 8.30am to 12.30pm) ✓ 23 Nov 2026 to 27 Nov 2026 (Mon to Friday 8.30am to 12.30pm) ✓ 28 Dec 2026 to 31 Dec 2026 (Mon to Thursday 8.30am to 12.30pm) Service may be required on school holidays and weekends if there are any issues or home visits to be made.
