About this role

Established in 2010, the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N) is a pan-university research institute that focuses on systems-level research for tropical megacities. It performs translational research that covers the energy value chain from generation to innovative end-use solutions, motivated by industrialization and deployment. ERI@N has multiple Interdisciplinary Research Programmes which focus on translational Research, Development & Deployment which focus on specific area of the energy value chain, and a number of Living labs and Testbeds which facilitate large scale technology deployment enabling validation and demonstration of real-world applications. For more details, please view https://www.ntu.edu.sg/erian We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow, Senior Research Engineer II or Research Fellow to support our research, development and testing initiatives in power electronics for medium-voltage grid-connected applications. These research efforts align closely with the university’s strategic goals toward building more sustainable societies. Key Responsibilities: Drive the design and development of high-voltage, high-power converter systems (DC-DC, AC-DC, DC-AC) for grid-connected applications, with emphasis on circuit design, system architecture, and control strategies. Perform detailed modeling and simulation of power electronics circuits and systems to validate design integrity, optimize performance, and assess fault tolerance under various operating conditions. Architect and implement multilayer PCB designs, ensuring optimal layout for signal integrity, power integrity, thermal management, and EMI compliance. Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and laboratory setups to evaluate hardware functionality and system reliability under both normal and fault scenarios. Collaborate cross-functionally with control engineers, hardware designers, and system integrators to integrate real-time control algorithms and maintain a robust test bench environment for prototype evaluation. Design and implement protection and fault management schemes to enhance system safety, resilience, and compliance with grid standards. Prepare high-quality technical documentation, including design specifications, simulation models, test reports, BOMs, and PCB files. Drive innovation through intellectual property generation and publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including procurement, finance, compliance, and safety, to ensure seamless project execution and alignment with institutional and regulatory frameworks. Job Requirements: PhD in Electrical Engineering, with a strong specialization in Power Electronics or related fields. 3–5 years of hands-on experience in the design, prototyping, testing, and validation of high-power converter systems, including grid-tied inverters, DC-DC converters, and battery energy storage systems is preferred. Expertise in advanced high-voltage, high-power multilevel converter topologies, such as NPC, FC, CHB, and MMC, with a deep understanding of their control complexities and system-level integration challenges. End-to-end hardware development experience, including schematic capture, multilayer PCB layout, system integration, and fault analysis in high-voltage environments. Strong foundation in system modelling and control, with proven ability to design, simulate, and implement reliable control strategies for complex power electronic systems. Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSIM, PSCAD/EMTDC, LTSpice, and QSPICE for module-level and system-level analysis and optimization. Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and contribute to innovation through IP generation and technical publications.
