Job Summary: The Metal Casting Foundry Technician is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining green sand molding processes to produce high-quality metal castings. The role includes mold preparation, green sand control, liquid metal handling, chemistry correction, melting support, pouring operations, quality inspection, equipment maintenance, and adherence to quality and safety standards. Key Responsibilities Monitor and control green sand properties, including moisture, compactability, permeability, and green compression strength. Support furnace melting operations and monitor molten metal temperature before tapping and pouring. Perform liquid metal sampling and analyze chemical composition using Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES) and handheld metal analyzers (XRF/LIBS). Interpret spectrometer analysis results and perform chemistry correction by calculating and adding the required ferroalloys, inoculants, silicon, manganese, or other alloying elements to achieve the specified chemical composition. Prepare and manage the treatment ladle, including the addition of inoculants, nodularizers and other treatment materials according to process requirements. Monitor slag removal, metal cleanliness, and ladle condition to ensure high-quality castings. Support metal pouring operations while following established foundry procedures and safety requirements. Identify and troubleshoot casting defects such as shrinkage, porosity, gas defects, sand inclusions, cold shuts, and misruns, and recommend corrective actions. Perform routine preventive maintenance on molding equipment, treatment ladles, spectrometers, and foundry equipment. Maintain accurate records of chemical analysis, furnace charges, treatment additions, production, and quality reports. Follow workplace safety procedures, including molten metal handling, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards. Assist in continuous improvement initiatives to increase productivity, reduce scrap, improve yield, and enhance casting quality. Train and mentor junior operators and technicians in foundry operations and quality practices. Required Qualifications Diploma, Technical Certificate, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field. Minimum 5 years of practical experience in a green sand metal casting foundry. Strong knowledge of green sand molding, core making, melting, molten metal treatment, pouring, and casting processes. Experience operating Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES) and handheld metal analyzers (XRF/LIBS) for chemical composition verification. Ability to perform liquid metal chemistry correction based on spectrometer analysis. Knowledge of furnace charge calculations, alloy additions, inoculation, and treatment ladle practices. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, casting specifications, and quality requirements. Familiarity with quality control tools, foundry process control, and root cause analysis. Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting. Good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
