The Role Lead the design and delivery of large-scale distributed systems supporting a global e-commerce platform. Own and influence architecture decisions across backend services, platform engineering, event-driven systems, cloud-native services, and data-intensive applications. Build and scale core platform capabilities across retail transactions, order management, fulfilment, product management, search, recommendations, pricing, promotions, and related e-commerce domains. Provide hands-on technical leadership while remaining actively involved in system design, coding, code reviews, troubleshooting, and production optimisation. Design resilient, fault-tolerant, observable, and high-performance services using AWS, MongoDB, Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch / OpenSearch, CloudWatch, and OpenTelemetry. Define engineering standards for scalability, reliability, performance, security, maintainability, testing, and operational excellence. Partner with engineering leadership, product teams, architects, DevOps, data teams, and business stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions. Guide teams on system design, service boundaries, API design, event-driven patterns, data modelling, caching strategies, search architecture, and distributed systems trade-offs. Drive improvements across observability, monitoring, alerting, tracing, incident response, and production support practices. Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, helping them improve technical depth, architectural thinking, code quality, and delivery discipline. Champion modern software engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, technical documentation, and secure development. Professionally leverage AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools to improve engineering productivity, technical documentation, code review quality, and development velocity. Identify technical debt, platform risks, performance bottlenecks, and scalability constraints, then drive pragmatic and sustainable solutions. Contribute to long-term engineering strategy, platform roadmap, and technology selection. Your Profile 10–15 years of professional software engineering experience, with strong experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems. Proven experience as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Lead Engineer, Senior Backend Engineer, Platform Engineer, or similar senior technical role. Strong hands-on backend engineering experience in one or more modern programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Node.js, Python, TypeScript, or similar. Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architecture, API design, data consistency, fault tolerance, and scalability patterns. Strong hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-native system design. Production experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases. Strong experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming / messaging technologies. Experience with Redis or similar caching / in-memory data platforms. Experience with Elasticsearch / OpenSearch for search, indexing, data discovery, or recommendation-related use cases. Strong understanding of observability, monitoring, tracing, logging, and production diagnostics using CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, or similar tools. Experience designing highly available, low-latency, resilient systems operating at significant scale. Strong understanding of security, reliability engineering, CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps collaboration. Ability to influence technical direction across teams without relying only on formal authority.
