About this role
About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist / Senior Scientist to lead the research, innovation, and deployment of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) that utilise repurposed second-life EV batteries. This role integrates battery science, ESS / Battery Management System (BMS) engineering, and AI/ML-powered analytics to develop safe, scalable, and intelligent solutions for second-life battery applications. You will contribute to the full technology development pipeline - from battery health assessment and grading to system-level design, predictive diagnostics, prototyping and testing of battery systems, as well as working on intelligent energy management. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering high-TRL ESS platforms, establishing data-driven BMS innovations, and shaping the next generation of second-life battery systems for real-world deployment. Roles and Responsibilities Lead the research, design, testing and deployment of second-life battery-based Energy Storage Systems (ESS), including battery health assessment, grading, system integration and validation. Develop intelligent BMS architectures, with capabilities in SOC/SOH estimation, protection strategies, fault diagnostics scalable control algorithms for heterogenous second-life modules. Design system-level ESS architecture, covering electrical configuration, thermal management, PCS/EMS interfacing, safety compliance, and performance optimization. Drive AI/ML-based predictive analytics, lifecycle modeling, and data-driven approaches to enhance ESS reliability, safety, and long-term operational performance. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and industry partners to translate research outcomes into high-TRL, industry-ready solutions. Contribute to standards-aligned processes for second-life battery certification, characterization, and system validation Job Requirements Strong expertise in lithium-ion battery systems and energy storage technologies. Experience in ESS system design, power electronics, battery modeling, or BMS development (software, controls, architecture). Knowledge of SOC/SOH estimation, battery degradation mechanisms and ageing analytics. Familiarity with system integration, EMS/PCS, and grid-connected systems. Familiarity with battery safety analysis and relevant compliance standards. Strong analytical skills and system-level thinking capability. Ability to translate research into deployable, high-TRL prototypes or solutions. Hands-on experience with modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python-based modelling, or embedded systems development. Experience working with industry partners. Track record of scientific publications, patents, or technology commercialization. Qualifications PhD in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Power Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, or a related discipline (for Scientist role). For Senior Scientist: demonstrated leadership in large-scale R&D programmes/projects and industry translation experience. 6+ years of relevant experience in battery dataset handling, ESS/BMS development, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and system optimisation Experience with UL1974, UL9540, or other relevant ESS standards is a strong plus The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
