About this role

Overview* To assist Senior Principal Medical Scientist or Principal Medical Scientist or Senior Medical Scientist in the supervision, carrying out and maintenance of daily operations in the diagnostic laboratory, to participate in teaching and undertake administrative tasks so as to achieve smooth running of a quality laboratory service at all times. Job Responsibilities* Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%) 1. Supervise and participate laboratory specimens through main Pneumatic Tube delivery system and over the counter and reject those that are unsuitable for analysis. 2. Operate the Laboratory Information System to perform functions such as order entry (only if required), sample receipt, result query and result entry. 3. Sort and arrange specimens in collection bins for different sections and dispatch samples to the correct benches. Perform simple processing and sorting. 4. Manage specimen movement for inhouse and send out test. To ensure specimens are packed according to test catalogue for send-out test. 5. Receive and response enquiries from customers at reception and escalate to suitable personnel when they are unclear. 6. Perform laboratory test. Perform all procedures in accordance to laboratory protocols. 7. Alert appropriate personnel of critical values. 8. Undertake preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation. Notify appropriate laboratory personnel when laboratory instruments malfunction. 9. Notify appropriate laboratory personnel when test kits, reagents or other supplies should be re-ordered. 10. Report any adverse incidents to senior member of staff. Assist in the investigation and documentation of adverse incidents. 11. Perform shift duties as required. 12. Keep current with new instrumentation, techniques, and procedures by attending/participating in appropriate workshops, seminars and in-service education classes. 13. Comply with good laboratory practice as set out by the laboratory Accreditation Programme of the College of American Pathologist and Singapore regulatory agencies. 14. Receive and resolve queries from customers. 15. Promptly carry out instruction(s) of senior staff with regards to work procedures and duties. 16. Comply with all requirements of the Laboratory Safety Manual. 17. Comply to DLM Workplace Etiquette in line with NUHS Core Values. 18. Perform and interpret results of QC and take corrective action. 19. Conduct in-service education and continuing education classes. 20. Assist with planning of staff roster as required. 21. Coach trainees and new staff if assigned. 22. Assist RO in monitoring of staff performance and identify their training needs. 23. Assist to resolve technical issues. 24. Monitor and regular all quality assurance activities under the area of purview. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities (20%) 1. Carry out and assist in the evaluation and implement new laboratory test methodologies. 2. Undertake back-up procedures in the event of emergencies such as downtime. 3. Participate in routine laboratory administrative work such as filling, processing of deliver order, invoices etc. 4. Any other duties as assigned by RO and/or Section Leader. 5. Assist with drafting and updating laboratory protocols when required. 6. Participate and contribute to project teams and department meetings. 7. Assist with the preparation of annual workplan. Requirements* BSc or equivalent to Medical Laboratory Science Required Competencies and Capabilities (Skills, Experiences and Professional Licences) - At least 5 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience. - Good laboratory skills. - Good general health and no colour blindness. - Basic computer literacy in proficiency in laboratory information system. - Service oriented and customer focused. - Good communication and interpersonal skills. - Proactive with good leadership skills - Ability to multi-task and prioritise workload as part of a team. - Coaching skills.
