Job Description This role encompasses both L2 and L3 responsibilities, the role requires strong experience with PostgreSQL internals, tools, and technologies, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills. Experience with PostgreSQL forks such as EDB Postgres Advanced Server, AlloyDB, GaussDB and its tooling is a plus. Candidates are expected to be proficient in automation and demonstrate a proactive approach to improving database systems, with the expectation that individuals will grow into the more advanced aspects of the role over time. Responsibilities: Diagnose and resolve PostgreSQL database incidents, from common performance issues to complex data corruptions. Develop and maintain runbooks and automated recovery procedures for L1. Lead root cause analysis for critical incidents and implement preventative measures. Review database change scripts for potential issues and ensure compatibility. Implement schema changes, upgrades, and data migrations. Develop and maintain deployment scripts and CI/CD pipelines. Provide expert advice on database design and architecture. Optimize complex SQL queries and data models. Plan and execute PostgreSQL upgrades and patching, validating database integrity. Implement and maintain high availability solutions (streaming replication, EFM, Patroni, PGbouncer). Lead major upgrades and migrations, evaluating new PostgreSQL features and extensions. Assist developers with database-related queries and performance optimization. Provide guidance on schema design, indexing, and query tuning. Manage database permissions and develop stored procedures, functions, and views. Evaluate and prioritize complex user requests, providing UAT support and developing custom solutions. Monitor database resource usage and identify bottlenecks. Forecast capacity needs and plan for growth. Analyze performance using relevant tools (auto_explain, pg_stat_statements, etc.) and tune database parameters. Develop and maintain performance dashboards and custom monitoring solutions. Implement and maintain robust backup and recovery strategies using tools like pg_basebackup, pg_dump, barman. Develop and test disaster recovery plans, exploring advanced replication technologies (logical replication). Implement and maintain security best practices, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and auditing. Stay up-to-date on security vulnerabilities and implement advanced security measures (auditing, encryption, role-based access control). Develop and maintain automation scripts (Bash, Python) to streamline DBA tasks. Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code for PostgreSQL deployments (Puppet, Ansible). Build and maintain custom tooling for PostgreSQL management and monitoring. Mentor and guide junior team members on PostgreSQL best practices and troubleshooting. Conduct training sessions and workshops on advanced PostgreSQL topics. 24 x 7 standby support. Job Requirements This role requires a candidate with strong experience in PostgreSQL internals, tools, and technologies. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential. Experience with PostgreSQL forks such as EDB Postgres Advanced Server, AlloyDB, and GaussDB, along with their tooling, is a plus. Candidates should be proficient in automation and demonstrate a proactive approach to improving database systems. Minimal 10 to 15 years of experience is required.
