DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF ACADEMIC HEAD The Head works under the Director of Academics (DoA) and is responsible for the following areas in the respective Academy: Strategic Planning Serve as a member of the School Management Committee (SMC) and participate in Curriculum Meetings (CM) in providing regular updates and contributing to decisions on matters related to the curriculum and school policies. Conduct strategic planning and set the direction for the department in alignment with the school strategic plan and to cascade school policies to the departmental level in the department work plan and other related platforms. Curriculum Matters Plan, oversee and coordinate the curriculum for the subject(s) and ensure that the skills and content taught are relevant, updated and are in alignment with the mission, vision and goals of the school. Plan, implement and review a comprehensive programme of instruction in the subject, including remedial and enrichment programmes. Vet the test and examination papers for the subject(s) and to moderate the test papers set and vetted by the teachers. Monitor, analyze and review the performance of students in the subject(s). Guide the teachers in terms of their professional learning and upgrading by sourcing for appropriate professional development courses, working together with the Subject Head(s), Curriculum Specialist(s) and Senior Teacher(s). Supervise and mentor the teachers in terms of the curriculum, pedagogy and delivery of the programme through classroom observations, induction of new/relief teachers, workshops. Evaluate, select and prepare suitable teaching-learning resources, e.g. textbooks, media resources, and encourage their effective use in the classroom. Staff Matters Conduct appraisal and ranking of the staff teaching the subject(s) and all support staff under his/her charge. Coordinate the work of the Subject Heads under his/her charge, if any. Assist the Dean in the recruitment of suitable teachers for the department and evaluate potential candidates. Administrative Duties Serve as an advisor to the DoA on professional matters concerning the subject. Assist the DoA to plan and manage the annual budget and monitor the expenditure for the subject. Coordinate with other relevant personnel in the running of academy events.
