Job Title Shipyard Foreman – Steel Works Job Description The Shipyard Foreman (Steel Works) is responsible for supervising and coordinating steel fabrication, structural repairs, and installation activities during shipbuilding, ship repair, or offshore projects. The foreman ensures that work is completed safely, on schedule, and according to quality standards and project specifications. Key Responsibilities Supervise daily steel work activities, including fabrication, cutting, fitting, welding, and installation. Allocate manpower, equipment, and materials efficiently. Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work instructions. Monitor work progress to ensure projects meet schedule and quality requirements. Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations, permit-to-work systems, and company policies. Coordinate with production engineers, project managers, quality inspectors, and subcontractors. Conduct toolbox meetings and provide guidance to workers. Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with classification society and customer requirements. Identify and resolve production issues, delays, and quality concerns. Prepare daily progress reports and maintain work records. Ensure proper housekeeping and safe working conditions within the work area. Requirements Diploma, Technical Certificate, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field. Minimum 5–10 years of experience in shipbuilding or ship repair, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or foreman role. Strong knowledge of steel fabrication, structural repairs, welding, and fitting processes. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and ship structural plans. Good understanding of shipyard safety regulations and quality standards. Leadership and team management skills. Good communication and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight project deadlines. Familiarity with Class Society requirements (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register) is an advantage. Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic reporting tools is preferred. Preferred Skills Planning and scheduling of steel work activities. Knowledge of welding procedures and quality control. Experience in dry dock and afloat repairs. Effective coordination with multiple trades and departments. Strong decision-making and conflict resolution skills. Commitment to safety, productivity, and continuous improvement. Working Conditions Work is primarily based in a shipyard environment. May require overtime, shift work, weekend work, and work in confined spaces or at heights. Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety regulations.
